1950s Wedding Shoot ~ The Hempel Hotel

For the past 6 weeks I have had the pleasure of planning and shooting a fabulous 1950s themed wedding shoot with Alex Peploe from Postscript Events. I have had the idea for a while to put together a wedding shoot as a great way to network with other wedding suppliers, learn more about the current industry from their side of the industry as well as hear what their brides are looking for in their weddings.

1950 Wedding Shoot

We both have a shared love of the 50s, from the films and music to the fashion. I was brought up on a healthy dose of Elvis, Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers, thanks to my wonderful mother, and Alex has a 50s themed wedding planned for next year!

1950 Wedding Shoot

Our original shoot idea started off small with an initial plan of two models and a dress supplier. However, the shoot soon took a life of its own until we had six models, three dress suppliers, flowers, stationery, jewellery, lingerie...practically everything a bride-to-be will be looking to arrange.

As the shoot grew, we put together a back story to the shoot to ensure all aspects of a wedding were covered. We wanted the shoot to highlight for brides planning a wedding, whether with a 1950s theme or not, some of the suppliers available to them.

The back story.....James Hugo Royce was travelling in Europe on business for his father and met Elizabeth Colette Cavendish-Douglas in Paris. The pair fell in love, he asked for her hand in marriage with a beautiful diamond ring and an extravagant London wedding was planned.

Such a match deserves a gorgeous setting, so we were delighted when The Hempel said we could use their premises for the shoot. The Hempel, designed by Anoushka Hempel, is a boutique hotel in Bayswater, close to Hyde Park. The hotel is absolutely stunning with a minimalist take on luxury and it provided the perfect backdrop for the gorgeous dresses and accessories we were using. With its own tranquil garden, it is a perfect location for an intimate London wedding.

We were honoured when Gilda & Pearl agreed to loan us a number of pieces for the shoot. It allowed us to add some bridal boudoir to the shoot. Well, a bride should never be without fabulous lingerie on her wedding day!

The gorgeous garter is part of Glitzy Secrets Wedding Belles collection with a charm that can be removed after your special day and added to a chain. It was one of many pieces from Glitzy Secrets were kind enough to lend us. My favourite piece is this stunning necklace which would look perfect with any vintage inspired gown, including the Summerville dress by Look Darling as worn by young 'Elizabeth'.

Let’s not forget about our gorgeous groom, who without the help of Craig from Staggered UK, wouldn’t be so well...erm...groomed! On Craig’s advice I contacted Steve at Hugh Harris who not only supply us with two rather dapper suits, but also hand delivered them to the hotel on the day of the shoot. I can’t thank you both enough for your help at such short notice.

At the National Wedding Show at Earls Court in September, I met Sarah from White Knot. Sarah is a wedding stationery designer and was wonderful enough to not only supply stationery for the shoot, but design a set specifically including a table plan. She took on board our ideas and was able to turn them into the stunning designs you see.

No wedding is ever complete without cake and flowers! Mary Jane Vaughn created a gorgeous winter bouquet to fit with our theme while Restoration Cake’s pearl creation, Gloria looked amazing. I wish my cakes looked this good!

Though the main focus of the shoot was James and Elizabeth, with such generous help from Emma at Look Darling, Shelley and Kirstie at Kitty & Dulcie and Joanne at Ian Stuart, we were also able to showcase a number of different bridal looks for brides with different budgets from the super, fun Bobby Dazzler by Kitty & Dulcie to the sublime, traditional, Grace Kelly dress by Ian Stuart. Don’t you just love their Flo & Percy hair accessories?!

Yulia from Hepburn Collection created some divine hair styles for our models while Miss Honey Bare finished their look with some classic 1950s make-up. They both worked tirelessly to make sure every model was picture perfect in a short space of time.

What a day! I can’t thank everyone involved in the shoot enough for making this all possible. Alex, how much fun can you have in a little over a month?! Looking forward to working with you on more projects in the future.

Sarah, I love shooting with you and a big thank you for coming up to London to assist me. I hope I get to work with you all again soon.
